SEND in 2019: How can digital drive better outcomes?
In recent years, the topic of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) has gained increasing focus as a system ‘in crisis’, with local authorities trying to achieve better outcomes for children and young people, despite funding cuts.
The Department for Education (DfE) recently reported that there were 354,000 children and young people with Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans maintained by local authorities as at January 2019 – an increase of 11% on 2018. In fact, the total number of children and young people with statements of SEN or EHC plans has increased each year since 2010.
With requirements increasing and budgets being reduced, there is more pressure on local authorities to deliver. According to the statistics, the proportion of new EHC plans issued within the statutory 20-week timeframe has fallen and councils are facing pressure from families to become more accountable.
Eighteen local authorities are already working with Idox to roll out the EHC Hub – an innovative digital platform for families, professionals and education settings to engage, contribute and collaborate on EHC assessments, plans and reviews.
