Metrolinx selects Idox to transform Toronto bus terminal

Idox has secured a new contract with Canadian-based transportation operator, Metrolinx to deliver a state-of-the-art Terminal Management System for a new bus station in Toronto.

Metrolinx is currently responsible for planning, building, operating and connecting transportation in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area, undertaking the largest transportation investment in Ontario’s history.

Aiming to improve citizen experience and safety, connect communities and achieve a healthier environment, the agency’s latest project will deliver a new Union Street Bus Terminal, with construction now well underway. The terminal will provide improved access to Toronto’s connecting rail lines and is set to double the number of bus bays to better accommodate the 485 bus trips and 13,000+ passengers it currently supports daily.

The Idox team is equipped to provide a dynamic and scalable enterprise-wide solution, delivering the core functionality required to manage the new terminal, and customisable features which can be adapted and optimised to suit different facility configurations, purposes and needs.

Once live, the system is intended to manage bus movements between the new terminals and staging areas efficiently and safely, supporting dynamic bus bay allocation by combining pre-defined schedule data and stand preference information to assign arriving buses to the available platforms – correlating their service and line numbers and expected time of arrival and departure. Not only will this better utilise terminal space (by up to 70%) and improve bus flow, it will also improve the experience and flow of passengers and drivers by providing accurate, real-time arrival and stand allocation information.
