FusionLive powers
next-gen Tag Management
for global engineering and
consultancy leader
Since implementing FusionLive Tag Management, we have seen significant cost and time savings. Because it ensures tag data accuracy and streamlines the process, we’ve increased project efficiency and delivery speed, creating time savings for our people and value for our customers. Our feedback during the early adopter programme helped shape the final product. We found the tag recognition, the interface and the module integrated seamlessly into our existing document review workflows. The auto-validation options were strong, and the tag register data was comprehensive. Overall, it’s a valuable, effective addition to our project toolkit and we were delighted to be involved as an early adopter.

Background:
Wood is a global consulting and engineering powerhouse, delivering critical projects across the energy and materials markets. Supporting asset-intensive projects throughout their lifecycle – from concept to decommissioning – Wood’s services span engineering, consulting, project execution, and operations management. With operations in over 60 countries and a workforce of around 35,000, Wood is a trusted delivery partner for some of the most complex energy and materials projects in the world.
Oil & gas remains a core market for Wood, where their priorities focus on lowering carbon intensity while increasing project value for their clients. Central to these ambitions is the ability to efficiently manage complex datasets, documents, and interlinked systems throughout a project’s lifecycle – which is where tag management becomes crucial.
Challenge:
For a period, Wood managed tagged data through a mix of internally developed solutions, third-party platforms and manual methods. These included tagging documents by hand and relying on Engineering or Document Control to cross-reference information. These methods were resource-intensive, inconsistent across projects, and often placed tag data outside the document management environment. These circumstances can increase risk of errors and inefficiencies.
Additionally, internal solutions sometimes required specialist resources to deploy and maintain – resources not always available. While the platform used offered more advanced features, it came at a cost often only justifiable on large, multi-phase projects. Projects with tighter margins were frequently left with limited access to scalable, efficient tag extraction tools.
Solution:
Wood has a long-standing relationship with Idox, initially selecting Citadon Collaboration Workspace in 2003 to support drawing and document collaboration. In 2019, Wood migrated to Idox’s modern document control platform, FusionLive, recognising its potential to streamline project collaboration and document lifecycle management.
Following this migration, Wood engaged closely with Idox during the development of a new Tag Management module. They became a strategic early adopter in 2023, testing the module across two major capital projects in the United States and feeding invaluable insights throughout the development cycle.
This collaboration helped shape a powerful solution that met the real-world needs of Engineering Procurement Construction Management (EPCM) organisations like Wood: a system capable of extracting tags from drawings, building a Master Tag Registry, auto-validating tag data, and establishing relationships between tags and documents – all within FusionLive.
Key benefits
Improved efficiency and cost savings
By replacing manual processes and costly third-party tools, FusionLive Tag Management saves Wood both time and money. The system streamlines previously labour-intensive work, allowing teams to focus on high-value tasks.
Increased project delivery speed
The built-in tag validation within FusionLive’s document workflows accelerates delivery by eliminating delays caused by missing or incorrect tag data. This directly supports better project execution and alignment with client delivery timelines.
Greater value for customers
Wood can offer more consistent tag management across a broader range of projects – even those with smaller budgets – improving the overall quality of service delivered to clients.
Operational flexibility
In addition to internal solutions and third-party tools, Wood now has a third option to approach tag management by leveraging FusionLive. This gives Wood the flexibility to choose the most cost-effective and appropriate method for each project.
Single source of truth
FusionLive Tag Management ensures that both documents and associated tag data are stored and accessed within a single platform, increasing data accuracy and traceability across the entire project lifecycle.
Measurable outcomes
The Tag Extraction module in FusionLive provided real value to Wood and our client on a recent major capital project in the United States. The key was integrating the tag validation into the existing document review process. Engineering did not have to initiate a separate activity but were able to validate tags as part of a normal document review. The result was a tag register with document associations we could more confidently rely on. This not only helped us complete our data handover to the client with less effort but also made the tag register and document associations available to Engineering and our client through the FusionLive user interface.
