Latest Emergency Services Gazetteer data now available through Bluelight GMS
Idox is excited to support the latest enhancements to the Ordnance Survey Emergency Services Gazetteer (OS ESG), enabling emergency services to access richer, more detailed location intelligence through the Bluelight Gazetteer Management System (GMS) alongside AddressBase Premium (ABP).
The OS ESG has been developed in close collaboration with frontline emergency services to address a critical need for accurate, authoritative location data for places that do not exist in standard address datasets. From motorway junctions to bridge intersections; slipways to weirs; and named natural features such as cliffs, hills and waterfalls, these locations are where incidents frequently occur but are not represented in AddressBase Premium.
With over 1.3 million geographically significant features, all structured to the British Standard 7666 with assigned Unique Property Reference Numbers (UPRNs), the ESG delivers a new level of precision for emergency response, prevention planning and incident reporting.
The added detail in ESG helps teams respond faster, plan better and build a clearer picture of incidents.

Latest ESG data enhancements
Recent OS ESG releases introduce further depth and usability for emergency services, including:
- New datasets for weirs and slipways, expanding coverage of high-risk water and access locations
- Enhanced bridge interaction data, incorporating third-party names and numbers used operationally to identify bridges
- Additional bridge classification codes, identifying specific network interactions (for example, a footbridge over a canal or road over rail)
These enhancements give control rooms and operational teams greater clarity when identifying and dispatching to complex or non-standard locations.
Single system delivering a trusted view of location data
Bluelight GMS already supports over half of Britain’s emergency services, providing a central platform for managing AddressBase Premium, locally added addresses, like the location of speed cameras, and associated risk information. With ESG now delivered alongside ABP within the same system, services can consume and manage both datasets together ensuring consistency across operational systems.
Bluelight GMS automatically handles updates from these national datasets, intelligently reconciling them with local records to ensure third-party systems are always using the most accurate and up-to-date information. The result is a single, trusted source of truth for address and location data, underpinned by UPRNs and built for interoperability.
Supporting faster response and smarter decisions
Access to ESG data through Bluelight GMS enables emergency services to:
- Deploy resources more precisely to complex or non-addressable locations
- Improve situational awareness in the control room
- Strengthen prevention, protection and planning activities
- Enhance incident reporting and post-incident analysis
- Ensure consistent, trusted location data across command and control, mobilising and analytics systems.
Delivering ESG alongside AddressBase Premium and local data through a single GMS makes it easy to keep everything in sync, so every system is using the most up-to-date information, all underpinned by UPRNs.

A step forward for emergency location intelligence
The latest ESG enhancements represent more than just additional data, they mark a significant step forward in how emergency services can understand, share and act on location intelligence. By making ESG available alongside ABP through Bluelight GMS, Idox is helping services respond faster, reduce risk and operate with greater confidence when every second counts.
