Reducing syringe pump loss through a clinically safe, co-designed approach
Reducing syringe pump loss through a clinically safe, co-designed approach
A co-designed approach that improves visibility across hospital and community care settings, helping NHS teams locate devices faster, reduce unnecessary cost and focus on patient care.
When essential devices go missing, patient care is impacted
Syringe pumps are critical to delivering safe and effective care, particularly in palliative and end-of-life settings.
At Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the loss and misplacement of devices had become a recognised clinical and operational risk across services.
This created delays in pain relief, increased pressure on clinical and community teams, unnecessary replacement costs and reduced visibility of equipment across hospital and community care settings.
This was both a logistics issue, and a clinical and operational risk that required a new approach.

A dedicated tracking solution, built for NHS use
In partnership with Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Gloucestershire Managed Services, and frontline teams, Idox developed a bespoke asset-tracking solution for BodyGuardโข T and T34 syringe pumps.
This combines:
- Enhanced lockbox design based on the widely used BodyGuardโข T lockbox.
Upgraded with more robust materials for long-term use and redesigned to safely house a tracking device without interfering with pump operation. Suitable for both hospital and community environments and comes with an internal label slot for easy identification of trust ownership. - Integrated tracking device
Indoor and outdoor location tracking using GNSS, WiโFi and cellular network data specifically selected for NHS use cases. Enables visibility of devices beyond hospital walls and throughout patient transfers. - iAssets tracking software
Secure, hosted platform accessible via login, provides real-time and historical device location. Tracks usage, inactivity, maintenance needs and battery status and supports proactive asset management and recall.
Together, this creates a complete, clinically safe asset tracking solution.

A partnership built on collaboration that delivered meaningful change
This solution was not developed in isolation. It was created through close collaboration between GHNHSFT, GMS and Idox clinical teams, engineering specialists and digital and technology partners.
The result is a repeatable, scalable model that other NHS organisations can adopt.
Through iAssets, Idox supports NHS organisations in tracking and managing a wide range of medical assets to improve asset visibility, operational efficiency and capital planning and cost control.
