Idox delivers enhanced bus network using industry-first innovation

In February 2018, Idox was selected as the sole supplier of a complete bus network management solution for four partnering local authorities – covering two large UK cities and the surrounding region.

The multi-million pound contract replaced an incumbent supplier, with the Idox team responsible for providing a central Real Time Information (RTI) system to bus passengers, local authorities and bus operators, as well as overseeing the maintenance of more than 1,000 RTI displays, Traffic Signal Priority systems and numerous data feeds.

Now Live, the project demonstrated a landmark approach to real-time transport management, with Idox having taken over and upgraded 1,100 displays in just three months.

Achieving an industry-first by performing a software-only adoption of all existing RTPI display hardware, the team avoided the complete hardware replacement that’s often required by other suppliers inheriting a system. This innovative approach has the potential to speed up ‘smarter transport’ projects, and provide the industry with huge savings on typical RTI system takeovers.

The Idox team is proud and excited to have delivered a reliable and intelligent transport network for citizens and stakeholders across the region, and in quick time. Thousands of bus passengers are already enjoying the benefits of receiving timely departure information via bus stop displays and online web interfaces, making it easier to plan travel and use public transport.

The implemented system will also facilitate dynamic traffic signal management to ensure the unhindered flow of buses in the area, boosting efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
