Christchurch & East Dorset Councils have selected Idox Public Access solution to provide an on-line public resource, designed to improve the delivery of Licensing. One of the key benefits of Public Access is that it provides relevant, up-to-date information automatically to citizens, elected members and other stakeholders, thereby reducing the need for direct contact with the service department either by telephone or by personal visits to the office.
The new system will be integrated with the existing Idox Document Management System solution already in use by the council.
Five major figures reflect candidly on the original New Town programmes, in a new report published by Idox. Drawing on original archive interview material, the report offers an intriguing insight into the challenges they faced in creating communities from scratch.
Idox, the leading provider of Planning, Building Control and related services in the UK, today launched the report “Planning the New Towns – In Their Own Words”, edited by Morwen Johnson. The report makes publicly available for the first time, 5 interviews carried out in the 1980s and 1990s with those directly involved. As they reflect on their experience we can hear pride, as well as a touch of bemusement at the scale of the programme that they were part of delivering.
The 33 New Towns developed since 1946 represent the most sustained programme of new town development undertaken anywhere in the world. Today, they are home to over three million people.
The New Towns Programme drew on the expertise and enthusiasm of a group of committed and visionary planners and architects. As well as being the driving force behind specific New Town schemes, many of these individuals became major figures in the development of late 20th century architecture and town planning in the UK.

East Northamptonshire Council has used a range of Idox solutions over a number of years including Planning, Building Control and Environmental Health and has extended its portfolio with the addition of Idox Electronic Document Management Solution (EDMS) replacing their existing Microsoft SharePoint system.
The new system will be integrated into these existing Idox solutions in order to improve the sharing and flow of information across the Directorate and to support the online publication of documents for citizens, consultees and third parties helping to increase efficiency and improve the delivery of services.

NIRMA, the Nuclear Information Records Management Association, is partnering with leading engineering information management company, Idox EIM (McLaren Software) to launch a new benchmarking study. The survey will assess the levels of maturity when leveraging information technology in the design change process, across the US Nuclear industry.
With the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) embarking on a three year industry initiative, there is a renewed focus among nuclear operators on improving efficiencies and reducing costs. Delivering the Nuclear Promise: Advancing Safety, Reliability and Economic Performance is a multiyear strategy to transform the industry, seeking to analyze technological and operational changes that could enhance safety and provide greater efficiency. The strategy is also concerned with leveraging technology to ensure widespread adoption of innovative tools and techniques that could reduce costs.
Rebecca Wessman, President at NIRMA, commented: “As every plant already has some degree of automation in managing the design change process, we felt it useful to try and measure the level of maturity to which each plant is performing today. To achieve this, we have identified a series of design change maturity levels to support a self-assessment approach. We are conducting an online survey, in partnership with Idox EIM, of all the nuclear operators and will publish the aggregated findings – without any mention of specific plant operators – at the NIRMA Annual Conference in August. This will allow each nuclear plant to perform a benchmarking assessment on their maturity ranking against the industry as a whole and gain insight into how they measure up with best practice.”
Tim Fleet, VP of Business Development with Idox EIM commented: “A key aspect of every nuclear plant is managing the design change process and making sure it is performed in a consistent and repeatable manner. Every plant already does this in order to maintain compliance with its own quality guidelines and federal regulations. What varies, however, is the method to achieve the compliance and the level to which information technology is leveraged as part of the process.”
Tim continued: “We have been providing solutions to the nuclear industry for over 20 years and believe there is an opportunity to raise the bar in this area by increasing the level of automation when managing design change, so nuclear plants can increase efficiencies and lower costs. We conducted a benchmarking study with NIRMA back in 2014 and it will be interesting to see how much progress has been made with those outcomes: parallel working, less paper-driven activity and improved communication since then.”
He explained: “The results of this new study will help us provide advice on how nuclear plants can advance upwards within the maturity model. It might be a single leap to the current best practice, or just a small incremental step up the maturity ladder but the results will provide us with a picture of the current environment and what more needs to be done to achieve the aims of the NEI Promise.”

‘Europe is not only for big multinationals and renowned knowledge institutes, but also for smaller innovative companies with international ambitions. As long as they know which paths to follow’, was the main message of Ahmet Polat, international innovation specialist from the Dutch Government speaking at the latest Idox Grants’ event held recently in The Netherlands.
European funding opportunities for ambitious and innovative companies
Polat, with over twelve years of experience in the formation of international consortia, was one of the key speakers who provided insight and expertise into the main international funding opportunities for SMEs over the coming six month. As a specialist at the Ministry of Economic Affairs he guided the audience through such programmes as Eurostars, Horizon2020 and Fast Track to Innovation and accentuated that ‘cooperation’ and ‘international ambition’ are keywords for organisations to be successful in Europe. Another key speaker, representing the European Regional Development Fund, reinforced the presence of opportunities for SMEs within the European funding landscape.
Success for Idox Grants’ focus on EU funding programmes
Idox Grants’ focus in recent years on European funding programmes has already led to some notable grant wins such as Vencer, who developed a technique for a modular chassis which can be copied by other sports car producers.

Idox has successfully secured a new contract from Kingston & Sutton Councils to provide a new integrated planning software system following a recent tender under the Crown Commercial Service LASA Framework. The solution will replace existing systems such as Civica Fastsuite at Sutton and in-house developed systems at Kingston.
The Idox system will help the councils streamline the delivery of core services within Planning, Building Control and Land Charges and enable the councils to make significant cost savings whilst providing a modern, competitive and flexible service that matches the needs of citizens whilst maintaining a consistent high standard of service.
At the end of May, CAFM Explorer, Idox's market-leading facilities management software, hosted two regional User Group events in Salford and London. Over 40 current customers came together to network, learn and collaborate on the future direction of CAFM Explorer.
The highlight for users at both events was the release of CAFM Explorer 9.2.1 which provides updates to checklist functionality for statutory inspections, web-based room booking functionality and enhancements to helpdesk functionality and usability. All three of these core updates have been customer led and generated through discussions at our User Group events.
In Salford we were joined by Chris Lloyd, Head of Safety and Operational Risks at Historic England, who provided insights on Health & Safety. In London Roger Wragg from Rothschilds provided a case study looking at how they set up their core CAFM Explorer system and managed the move of their assets from one iconic building to another.

Fusion P8 3.15 is now available with new functionality as a direct result of customer feedback.
The latest improvements to Fusion P8 have been developed and launched as a direct result of customer feedback and input from the Customer Advisory Board. For many of these improvements, we have worked alongside real Fusion P8 users to see how we could enhance the product for performing their day-to-day activities. To do this, we looked at specific usage scenarios and worked on how efficiencies could be made.
Tim Fleet, VP of Business Development, talks about the significance of the updates. “In recent months we’ve held a number of Customer Advisory Board (CAB) sessions, actively seeking input from our customers and asking them what they would like to see in our products. This time, we visited them on-site and worked through a number of scenarios to understand how Fusion P8 is being used and how we could improve it to better suit the users. The latest release brings the feedback to reality and has also informed the roadmap for future releases.”

Managing interruptions to be more productive
It’s unlikely that you will be able to work on something from start to finish without being interrupted by a phone call, email or more urgent request. In the case of Fusion P8, a user might have searched for information and be working on documents in the search results. They receive a phone call and are diverted from what they are doing to answer a more urgent query.
Previously, the user would have had to navigate away from what they had been working on, perform the new search to deal with the query and lose what they had been working on. Now, they are able to work on tasks concurrently, deal with the urgent question, click on the original search result to select the earlier result and carry on working as they were. Fusion P8 has now been enhanced to retain more than one search result.
The improvements also extend to users continuing where they left off the previous day. They might not have finished on the results of their search when they leave for the night. In the new version of Fusion P8, users can log off and retain their search. When they next log in, the systems brings them back to where they left off in the last session.
Index templates to save time
Often users will have to submit records to be stored, with few details changing from one record to the next. Where previously, they would have had to create each record from scratch, they can now create templates with the fields commonly saved and work from those to create further records in batches, saving time and reducing errors. It also allows them to leave that task to work on something else and pick up the template later to continue as it is easier to find. Templates can also be shared across teams and departments to improve collaboration and reduce rework.
Collaboration and team working with My Favorites
People work in different ways and like to have control over the way they store and share their documents. In Fusion P8, users can create their own personal folder structures in My Favorites at their convenience whilst control and security is still maintained. With the new release, teams of users can now share items in Public Favorites. Folders can also be created in the Public area of My Favorites to share documents with a restricted group, for example, a project team, related to a specific task or project that they are working on, making it easier to find and share related content.

Trafford Council has selected Idox document management solution (DMS) to support core business systems within the council replacing a system previously provided by Serengeti.
The new system will be integrated into existing Idox solutions already in use by the council within core functions such as Development Control and Building Control enabling the council to improve information sharing and increase efficiency. The system will also be integrated with Idox Enterprise and Idox Public & Consultee Access.
In addition, Idox will extract and migrate data stored within the council’s legacy system to Idox DMS.

Almost six months after the initial launch of iApply, many local authorities across the UK are benefitting from our innovative online service. iApply enables planning applications and building control consent to be applied for via a single source, directly into the local authority’s back office. This provides significant time and cost savings, both for those making large submissions and the planning departments, which will ultimately lead to a more timely and efficient service.
North Yorkshire Building Control Partnership (NYBCP) was one of the early adopters of iApply, in fact the business was even involved in the initial pilot. We interviewed Les Chapman, Head of Building Control at NYBCP to find out what difference iApply has made to his business.
